As well as helping fund specialist E-Flow nebulisers for patients with Cystic Fibrosis, UHNM Charity has also supported the purchase of new monitoring equipment to improve exercise testing at University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust.
The new wrist-worn pulse oximeter connects wirelessly to a laptop or tablet, allowing clinicians to monitor oxygen levels and heart rate in real time during exercise tests.
Dave, Cystic Fibrosis Physiotherapist, explained why the new equipment is making a difference.
He said: “As part of our routine care, we carry out exercise testing with all our patients, from children through to adults.
“Our previous pulse oximeter was large and bulky, and it could sometimes be difficult to use. We often had to stop patients during the test to check the readings.”
The new device allows patients to complete their exercise test without interruptions while clinicians monitor their results remotely.
Dave said: “This small device sits comfortably on the wrist and connects via Bluetooth to a laptop or iPad. We can see the readings live on screen without asking the patient to stop.
“It makes the exercise test a much smoother process, gives us more reliable data and provides a better experience for our patients.”
The equipment was purchased with support from UHNM Charity. Alongside the E-Flow nebulisers, it is helping the Cystic Fibrosis team provide more efficient treatment and a better experience for patients.
