Leaving a gift in your will
Leaving a gift to UHNM Charity in your will is a powerful way to support the hospital and ensure future patients receive the best care.
Whether you’re planning to leave a specific sum, a percentage of your estate, or the remainder after other provisions, your legacy will make a lasting impact. It’s important to understand the steps involved, from listing your assets and choosing beneficiaries to appointing executors and ensuring your will is legally binding.

How your legacy gift helps us
Legacy FAQ’s
Legacies are not only an important source of income for us but are also a tax-efficient way of giving. Inheritance tax is not paid on gifts of money or property left to a registered charity. Any inheritance tax which is payable on the remainder of your estate is calculated after the value of the gift has been deducted.
Dying without having an up-to-date will is known as an ‘intestacy’. If you die intestate, it is up to the law to decide how your estate is distributed, which may not reflect your wishes.
We recommend that you only write a will through a qualified solicitor or a member of the Institute of Professional Will Writers.
Although it is not a legal requirement to have a properly prepared will, organising your will can bring peace of mind to your loved ones. Your will is the only way for you to decide what happens to your money, property and personal possessions when you’ve gone.
While it is possible to draft a will yourself, it is recommended that you seek the help and advice of a solicitor.
Should you choose to leave us a gift in your will, the following clauses may be helpful when making a legacy:
For a residuary bequest (or percentage):
“I give (%) of the residue of my estate to the University Hospitals of North Midlands Charity (registered charity number 1054889) for its charitable purposes and I declare that the receipt of the Director of Finance or other authorised officer will be sufficient discharge to my executor(s).”
For a specific amount:
“I give (state amount) to the University Hospitals of North Midlands Charity (registered charity number 1054889) for its charitable purposes, and I declare that the receipt of the Director of Finance or other authorised officer will be sufficient discharge to my executor(s).” Should you wish to include a specific ward or department or type of research please advise your solicitor.
No matter how big or small, leaving a donation in your will makes a huge difference to the patients, service users and families, at a time when it is most needed. It makes a difference for the generations to come.
