Patients living with Cystic Fibrosis are set to benefit from specialist nebuliser devices funded by UHNM Charity, helping make daily treatment quicker and less disruptive.
The E-Flow nebuliser delivers medication in around four to five minutes, compared to up to 30 minutes with a conventional nebuliser. It can be used to deliver treatments that help loosen mucus or control lung infections.
Dave, Cystic Fibrosis Physiotherapist at University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust, said: “Cystic Fibrosis is a long-term condition that affects patients throughout their lives. As a team, we support them from a very young age right through adulthood.
“This device is called an E-Flow. It’s a nebuliser that delivers medication much faster than a conventional nebuliser. It takes around four or five minutes, whereas a conventional nebuliser can take up to half an hour.
“It’s very quiet, very quick and provides much better delivery of medication into the lungs.”
Each device costs around £1,000, making them difficult to purchase in large numbers through NHS budgets alone.
Dave added: “These bits of equipment aren’t cheap. Alongside the consumables, they become a significant cost.
“It’s fantastic that UHNM Charity has funded several of these devices. It means we can provide them to the patients who need them most.”
By reducing the time patients spend completing daily treatments, the devices help lessen the burden of living with Cystic Fibrosis.
Dave said: “Patients can have a much easier time doing their treatments and enjoy a better quality of life. They can spend less time worrying about taking their medication and more time getting on with living their lives.”
