Three Staffordshire community sewing groups have joined forces to support patients at University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust (UHNM), creating handmade gifts to provide comfort during treatment and recovery.
Biddulph Community Sewing Group, Caverswall Quilters and Staffordshire Stitchers recently donated their first batch of 74 handmade breast cancer support hearts to UHNM Charity.
The specially made cushions are designed to provide comfort to breast cancer patients following surgery, offering support during their recovery.
The initiative holds particular meaning for the groups, with former breast cancer patients among their members who understand the importance of receiving care and support during treatment.
Around 30 volunteers are involved in sewing and knitting items for patients, with plans to continue producing breast cancer support hearts, handmade bags and anxiety teeth for the hospital.
Lorraine, one of the volunteers involved in the initiative, said: “Hopefully we can get more donated fabric to keep these wonderful gifts coming to UHNM Charity.
“I have about 30 ladies who are willing to sew and knit to help patients with comfort and recovery.”
The groups have also supported the hospital through a Chemo Ducks fundraising initiative organised by Caverswall Quilters.
However, keeping the project going relies on donations of materials. Each metre of new cotton fabric produces just six breast cancer support hearts, meaning a regular supply of fabric, wool and cushion filling is needed.
The volunteers are now appealing for donations of materials and encouraging other local crafters to get involved, helping them continue providing handmade items for patients across UHNM.
UHNM Charity would like to thank Lorraine, Glynis, Lynda and everyone involved in the three community groups for their time, generosity and continued support.
