A fundraising event held at Universal Fitness has raised money for the Critical Care Unit at Royal Stoke University Hospital in memory of Mel.
Organised by Fran Brayford, the fundraiser brought together gym members, friends and families to support University Hospitals of North Midlands Charity and recognise the care Mel and her loved ones received from staff on the Critical Care Unit.
As part of the challenge, Fran and members of the gym community used cardio bikes to virtually cycle from Dawlish to Whitby, before continuing on to the Lake District, raising funds for Critical Care services along the way.
Paying tribute to the team who cared for Mel, Fran said: “When ‘thank you’ simply doesn’t feel enough.
“In loving memory of Mel, we want to take a moment to recognise and honour the incredible nursing and support staff on the Critical Care Unit, especially those in Pod 4, who showed extraordinary kindness, dedication and compassion.
“They not only cared for Mel with such dignity, but they also supported her family through one of the most difficult times imaginable.
“Their care will never be forgotten and we will carry deep gratitude for them always.”
Funds raised through the challenge will help support future patients and families receiving care on the unit.
Fran added: “It means so much to us that the funds raised can now be used to support other patients and families who may find themselves in similar circumstances, in the hope that they too can receive the same comfort and care.
“We are immensely grateful to the amazing gym community, friends and families whose generosity, kindness and willingness to come together made this possible. This collective effort is a true reflection of love and support.
“We know, without a doubt, that this would have made Mel so incredibly proud.”
Sandra Barrington, Matron for the Critical Care Unit, thanked Fran and everyone involved for their support.
Sandra said: “I would just like to say a huge thank you to Fran for organising the fundraising event at Universal Fitness to raise funds for the Critical Care Unit in memory of a family member who sadly passed away in December.
“I also really appreciate the lovely feedback that Fran has provided in relation to the care and support we provided at that time, and for thinking of us to receive this donation.
“Charity donations to Critical Care are invaluable and we ensure they benefit our patients and their family.”
