UHNM Clinical Nurse Educator Shirley Wallace has had her long locks lopped off to raise awareness and vital funds for the Trust’s Alcohol Liaison Team, in memory of her late ex-husband.
Mick Wallace suddenly passed away on 29 July 2024 at 51 years of age, after an illness which stemmed from alcohol misuse. Shirley said: “I believe his death may have been prevented if he had been aware of the impact of the total amount of alcohol (UNITS) he was drinking daily had been known years ago. There are a lot of us that don’t realise how many units of alcohol are in the drinks we are consuming.
“For over 20 years I have worked in Endoscopy and have seen the consequences of heavy drinking and the harm it can do. But you never see the people who are the long term functioning alcoholics that have had no symptoms, until it is too late to reverse any internal damage.”
Shirley has raised more than £800 by having 10 inches of hair chopped off and is now planning to donate her hair for wig making. If you wish to donate towards the fundraiser, please click here.
