UHNM Charity Funds Specialist Shower Chair for Acute Neuro Ward

Thanks to UHNM Charity funding, patients on the Acute Neuro Ward (228) now have access to a new specialist shower chair, designed to help those with complex needs safely enjoy a shower.

Jess Booth, Advanced Occupational Therapist for Neurosurgery 228 and Neurology 126, explained that “the previous standard shower chairs were not suitable for our patients who are not able to maintain independent sitting balance or head control.”

Some patients on the ward require specialist positioning and seating, and the new chair has already made a big difference. Jess said, “The specialist shower chair has been a huge benefit to our patients. Feedback from nursing staff has been very positive - it’s easy to use, supports good hygiene, and meets manual handling requirements thanks to the adjustable controls.”

Since the new chair’s arrival, staff have noticed that some patients with significant cognitive or physical complications appear more relaxed while showering. The activity has become a form of relaxation therapy, helping with rehabilitation, pain relief and better sleep.

Jess added, “The overall benefit of the specialist shower chair is that it has enhanced patient wellbeing, supported effective hygiene and is now being used as a therapeutic treatment to assess and rehabilitate patients both physically and cognitively.”

The new equipment has made a meaningful difference to daily life on Ward 228, improving patient care and helping staff deliver safe, dignified, and compassionate support.
