We were delighted to welcome members of Stone Master Marathoners to the Royal Stoke, who have raised over £2,000 in memory of friend and club member Dr Alison Brind.
Dr Brind, a Consultant Gastroenterologist and avid runner and walker, sadly passed away in April following a battle with pancreatic cancer.
Wishing to honour her memory, the club set about a series of fundraising initiatives during spring and summer.
Dr Indira Natarajan, Consultant Stroke Physician at UHNM and member of the Master Marathoners, said: “Alison was a long-standing member of the running club, and all of us knew her as a person, runner and friend. So, we as a club decided to do something for her.
“The money has come from a series of efforts by everyone at the club. We sold her book of memoirs and special Parkrun running t-shirts, and also raised funds by competing in the ‘Spring Treble’, which were three different hilly races.”
Bernie Priekulis from the Stone Master Marathoners said: “Alison wanted to increase awareness of liver disease, and this was an apt way to raise funds for UHNM Charity whilst doing that.
“Alison and I have run races in the UK and abroad, and I continued to walk with her since her diagnosis. Doing this has given a legacy to Alison, we’ve been able to contribute to a cause that’s close to her heart that will benefit other patients.
“This focused us all, as we all knew Alison and it was very relevant to us. We already have plans for events next year, including a yearly memorial Parkrun in her memory.”
