Local school take on 100-mile challenge for UHNM Charity

Pupils from Walton Priory Middle School are putting down their phones and games consoles for one month to complete a 100-mile challenge for UHNM Charity.

More than 70 students are completing the challenge in their own time by running, cycling or walking and recording their distance on their own tracking sheets.  To help, the school have set up a one-mile course around school allowing pupils to complete miles at lunchtime.

The students are hoping to raise enough funds to purchase a vein finder which helps doctors find a vein in babies and children and for a cubbie, which is a calm, comforting space designed to help children feel more at ease during their hospital visit.

Pupil Aubrey Meredith, 11, said: “We are doing the 100-mile challenge for UHNM Charity to support patients that need care at the hospital. I have been under the care of the hospital and there are so many people there who have helped me to overcome my illness. It’s amazing. It’s great to give something back.”

The school will continue the challenge throughout May and are hoping to reach their target of £2,000.

Headteacher Sara Houlton, said: “Over the last couple of years we have raised money for UHNM doing different challenges and we try and exceed the number of children being involved each year.

“So far, the challenge is going well, and we have had lots of support from other pupils who aren’t taking part, which really shows it’s a community event within the school.

“UHNM Charity is close to everyone’s heart. I have had to access the services and the care has been amazing, so I would encourage anyone to do their bit for UHNM Charity.”
