The first Big Girl Pants Ball is taking place in October, organised by Stategi Solutions. The ball is one of many fundraising events happening throughout 2023 all with the aim of raising £20,000 for UHNM Charity and the Breast Care team at UHNM.
Big Girl Pants exists because of Sue Fisher, the wife of Rob, the company’s Managing Director. Sue was diagnosed with breast cancer in October last year. Her journey began like many others- with a routine mammogram.
She said: “In September 2022 I got called in for my routine mammogram which I very nearly re-arranged as the timing was inconveniently right in the middle of the day. On top of that I wasn’t worried as I firmly believed that cancer wouldn’t happen to me.”
“I’m so glad I didn’t rearrange as the next month I was diagnosed with hormonal breast cancer following that routine mammogram. Unfortunately it had spread to my lymph nodes which meant I needed a course of chemotherapy, a full mastectomy, followed by a round of radiotherapy.”
“This all came as a massive shock to my husband Rob and I and was a lot to take in. We worried about the impact on family and friends, particularly our young son and the impact on him. But we needn’t had worried, everyone has been amazing.”
“One of the first things I said to the team after being diagnosed was ‘I need to put my big girl pants on’, and the name stuck.”
“The Breast Care Team at UHNM have been amazing every step of the way, and I’m so pleased to be able to support this fabulous team help more men and women who find themselves on this roller-coaster with no option to get off until it stops!”
Sue has written a blog about her cancer journey on the Big Girl Pants website where you can donate and purchase tickets to the ball
