Former patient raises money for UHNM Charity by hosting a coffee morning

A former UHNM heart patient has raised more than £600 for the Royal Stoke Coronary Care unit to say thank you for the outstanding care that was provided to him.

Ian and wife Alison, from Penkridge raised money for UHNM Charity by hosting their very own coffee morning at their local pub.

Ian received care at UHNM earlier this year when he went into cardiac arrest on the car park at County Hospital. Sarah Franks, a receptionist at County, immediately started to perform CPR, and with help from a passer-by, was able to seek help from the hospital’s A&E department where he was able to receive further treatment and then transferred to Royal Stoke.

Ian is now on the road to recovery after five months in hospital with plans in place for more fundraising for UHNM Charity.

Marie Pegg, UHNM Ward Manager for the Coronary Care unit, said: “It is lovely to see Ian looking so well because he was so poorly when he was with us. On behalf of everyone I would like to say a huge thank you to Ian and his wife Alison for raising money for the Coronary Care and Critical Care Unit. We are hoping to buy a blood gas machine which will be a really great addition to the unit.”

Ian said: “It’s really good to be back here today presenting the cheque from our coffee morning. I really wanted to raise some money for the unit because they saved my life and they do a fantastic job.

“It’s very strange being back on the ward because I can’t remember much about my time here, due to my illness, but it’s fantastic to see everyone today.”

Sarah Franks, Receptionist at County Hospital, who joined them for the presentation, said: “It’s amazing to see Ian, he looks like he is doing well. I attended the coffee morning where they raised the money for the unit it and it was just great to see Ian and Alison being so passionate about raising as much money as they can.”
