Football club complete 24-Hour Cyclethon for UHNM Charity

A Staffordshire football club has raised £500 for UHNM Charity after taking on a ‘wheelie’ impressive 24-hour cyclethon to support patients, staff, and services at Royal Stoke University Hospital and County Hospital, Stafford.

Members of Milton United Football Club cycled non-stop for a full 24 hours in a relay-style endurance challenge, which was organised after two close friends of the club received care from University Hospitals of North Midlands.

Donna Grocott, 46, from Milton, was treated for a bleed on the brain and underwent multiple life-saving operations and Marg Bartley, 53, also from Milton received treatment after being diagnosed with cancer.

The club have now donated £500 to UHNM Charity to help to improve patient experience whist in hospital.

Donna’s husband, Simon Grocott said: “We wanted to do something big, something that would push us physically and mentally to show how much UHNM means to us. This is our way of saying thank you and giving back.”

The family set up bikes and rotated throughout 24 hours, with each member taking turns to keep the wheels spinning. Friends, neighbours, and local businesses supported by offering refreshments, encouragement, and sponsorship.

Lisa Thomson, UHNM Charity Director, said: “I am delighted to hear the cyclethon was a great success, this is a truly heart-warming example of community spirit.

“The passion and determination embody what UHNM Charity is all about – people helping people.”
