The family of a retired Police Sergeant has made a transformative £20,000 donation to Ward 15 at County Hospital in Stafford, in gratitude for the exceptional care he received in his final days.
David Michael Griffiths, who was born in Rugeley in 1948 and served as a Police Sergeant in the town, was a resident of Little Haywood for over 50 years. When he was admitted to County Hospital in Stafford, the compassion and support shown by the staff on Ward 15 to both David and his family left a lasting impression.
Touched by the kindness of the team, especially during the late-night visits, David’s family decided to support the ward’s own fundraising mission to purchase comfortable chairs and pull-out beds for relatives staying with loved ones at the end of life.
The generous donation of £20,000 was presented to the ward by David’s nephew, Matthew Spooner, in his uncle’s memory.
Matthew Spooner said: “The staff were incredible with my Uncle and were so supportive with us when we were sitting here until silly o'clock in the morning at what was an awful time. We knew that they were collecting money to put some furniture into the rooms so that it’s more comfortable for families so we thought that it would be nice to recognise that with a donation.”
Julie Woodworth, Ward Manager for Ward 15, upon receiving the cheque, said: “It’s extremely generous and it means so much to know that our team is valued in this way. The money will make a massive difference and we’re all so grateful to Matthew and the rest of the family.”
The donation will directly fund new furniture, ensuring that families have a more comfortable and supportive environment during the most challenging of times.
