The family of Peter Morgan have raised £1,200 for Critical Care at Royal Stoke University Hospital in his memory.
Peter spent the final week of his life in Pod 3 of the Critical Care Unit. His wife, Barbara, said the team supported them with compassion and clarity throughout.
“Every doctor and nurse explained everything that was going on,” she said. “They treated us, and more importantly Peter, with the best care anyone could have wanted.”
During his stay, Peter needed a fan to help manage his temperature. Although one was not immediately available, Barbara felt small items like this can make a big difference to patients and families during difficult times.
After Peter’s death, Barbara chose to support the unit in recognition of the care they received.
At his funeral, £545 was donated. Peter had been a well-known and valued volunteer at Belgrave St Bartholomew’s Academy, where he regularly helped with litter picking and small DIY jobs while chatting with pupils and staff.
To honour his memory, the school held a Welsh-themed day. Pupils and staff dressed in red and green and each donated £1.
In total, £1,200 was raised for Critical Care.
Barbara said: “I hope in a small way it can help someone else in the Critical Care Unit, all in memory of my beloved husband Peter Morgan. He would be so overwhelmed by all this.”
Nicola Bradshaw, Advanced Critical Care Practitioner and Lead for Critical Care Outreach at Royal Stoke University Hospital, said:
“It was such an honour to receive this wonderfully kind donation on behalf of the critical care team that looked after Mr Peter Morgan. It’s very humbling to think that during the saddest of times, Peter’s wife Barbara was able to visit us and share her gratitude for the kindness shown to both herself and Peter whilst in critical care.
“I’m very proud to work with such a caring and compassionate team, and meeting Barbara again to hear about the fundraising they had done at the school in memory of Peter was really very special.”
