The family of a former patient who received ‘incredible’ care from UHNM have raised more than £800 for UHNM Charity in his memory.
Derek Sproston was first admitted to A&E in 2015, with a blood clot between his liver and small bowel and quickly received life-saving surgery.
After his recovery he went on to have multiple surgeries throughout the years, with many months spent in intensive care , recovering and returning home each time. Sadly, Derek was admitted to UHNM last year and passed away due to liver failure.
His son Ricky has now thanked staff at Royal Stoke for their care and to present a cheque to members of the UHNM charity team.
Ricky said: “After my dad passed away lots of his friends wanted to make donations and as a family we wanted to thank UHNM, so we have donated it to ward 109 where he spent most of his time during his hospital stays.
“My dad used to say the team were like his family, he knew he could always talk to them when he was worried, and it would be sorted.
“We would like to thank everyone who cared for him over the years, Royal Stoke was his second home and because of the care we were given it gave us another nine years.”
Julie O’Leary, Clinical Development Nurse at UHNM, said: “Derek's resilience and determination stood out as he faced challenges during his recovery. He continually bounced back, even if each hurdle took a different toll on him. It has been a privilege to know Derek and his family over many years and we are so grateful to receive a donation in Derek’s memory which will help future patients at UHNM.”
