The Provincial Priory of Staffordshire and Shropshire has raised over £5,000 to fund a new pupillometer for the Adult Critical Care Unit at UHNM.
Thanks to their generosity, patients will benefit from faster and more accurate neurological monitoring.
A pupillometer is a handheld device that uses safe infrared light to measure how a patient’s pupils respond. Instead of relying on a pen torch and visual assessment, it provides instant, precise readings. This allows clinical teams to detect even small changes in brain function.
As a Major Trauma Unit, UHNM cares for patients with severe head injuries, following cardiac arrest, and other life threatening conditions where time matters. Until now, one pupillometer has been shared across all critical care patients, which can be challenging in a busy and high acuity environment.
Dr Prabjoyt Kler, Critical Care Consultant at UHNM, said:
“Having additional access to this technology strengthens our ability to monitor patients quickly and accurately. It supports timely decision making and is especially important when caring for patients who may go on to become organ donors.”
David Philips, Provincial Prior of the Provincial Priory of Staffordshire and Shropshire, said:
“We are proud to support the Adult Critical Care Unit in this way. Knowing this equipment will help clinicians care for patients and support families at very difficult times makes our fundraising efforts truly worthwhile.”
We would like to thank David Philips and all members of the Provincial Priory of Staffordshire and Shropshire for their generosity. Support like this allows UHNM Charity to fund equipment that has a direct and lasting impact on patient care.
