About Legacies

What is a Legacy?

A traditional legacy is a lasting gift made through a will, allowing individuals to leave a meaningful impact on the causes they care about after their lifetime. At UHNM Charity, leaving a legacy means helping to enhance patient care, support medical research, and provide vital services across the UHNM NHS Trust. Whether large or small, a legacy donation ensures that future generations benefit from your generosity. By including UHNM Charity in your will, you can create a lasting difference that aligns with your personal values.

How to make a will

  1. Gather Information: List all your assets, such as property, savings, investments, and personal items. Also, make note of any debts you may have.

  2. Choose Your Beneficiaries: Decide who will inherit your assets. Beneficiaries can include family members, friends, charities, or organizations.

  3. Select Executors: Appoint one or more people (executors) who will be responsible for managing your estate and ensuring your wishes are carried out. Executors can be family members, friends, or professionals like solicitors.

  4. Decide on Guardians: If you have children under 18, choose guardians who will be responsible for their care.

  5. Draft Your Will: You can write your will yourself using a template, use a will-writing service, or consult a solicitor. Ensure the document is clear, unambiguous, and includes all necessary details.

  6. Sign Your Will: Sign your will in the presence of two independent witnesses who are not beneficiaries or spouses of beneficiaries. They must also sign the will.

  7. Store Your Will Safely: Keep your will in a safe place, such as a solicitor’s office or a secure storage service. Inform your executors where the will is kept.

  8. Review and Update Your Will: Regularly review and update your will, especially after major life events like marriage, divorce, or the birth of children.

  9. Consider Legal Advice: Although not mandatory, consulting a solicitor can ensure your will is legally sound and covers all aspects of your estate.

  10. Inform Loved Ones: Make sure your family and executors know where your will is stored and understand your wishes.
